Reuters syndication
News.com has some nice coverage today of a new project Brightcove has undertaken with Reuters. This is an innovative program that allows anyone to drop a click-and-play Reuters video news feed into their own site.
In the mid-90's, Ziff-Davis created a new tech-oriented television network called ZDTV, which would later become TechTV. They raised at least a $100 million - enough to build studios and distribution infrastructure, and to have a little left over to wine and dine cable execs to buy carriage for their fledgling channel.
Flash ahead less than ten years.
In a very short period of time, Reuters has effectively rolled out a worldwide video news network. No satellites. No steak dinners. Potentially thousands of affiliates.

I tried plugging it into my site. The problem I have is the player is simply too big for the space I have. Is there anyway to adjust the size of the player?

I've integrated the player into our site and it works fine, except it seems to exclude Linux users. Even those who have a Linux-version of Macromedia's Flashplayer 7.0 installed can't actually use the player.

Edgar - I would love to get some details on the Linux issue you are seeing. If you could provide details on the particular OS & Browser combination that would be very helpful. The player is loaded through JavaScript, so maybe there is an incompatible set that our dev & QA team has missed.

here is a working example on my site:

when can I start implementing this technology? I'm ready now!

One of the Linux versions is SuSE (Novell) 10.0, the browsers used are Firefox 1.5 and Konqueror. Flash 7.01 is installed and works fine with other applications and websites. Another distro that seems to have issues is Ubuntu.

Edgar,
Thanks for helping with the OS/Browser issues. I will pass along the information to our QA shop and we'll see what we can find.

Will it be possible in the near future to choose the type of news content offered? Say if someone runs a primarily technology focused blog or website. They could choose news stories related to that subject. Instead of just general news topics. This product seems to be running fairly smooth for me so far. I've tested it in IE, Flock and my FeedBurner RSS feed.

Iggy,
Though I can't comment specifically on Reuters immediate plans, I am sure the positive reception they have received for the program will greatly encourage them to expand the breadth of their syndication offerings.

Thanks for the quick reply. I need to add to my previous comments above. Using my FeedBurner feed in Flock - it seems the video player doesn't load. It loads fine on my blog when using Flock. But not with the RSS feed when using that browser. I've checked my settings and don't think this is specific to my end.

Brian is correct about Ubuntu having difficulty. This is Ubuntu Linux Breezy with Firefox 1.5.
It's barfing at line 76 of experience_util.js:
} else { // flash is too old or we can't detect the plugin

While perhaps more of a Reuters note than a BrightCove note, being able to add video category filters would be necesary before this is truly useful to a site.
For instance, a financial site having the "Oddly Enough" stories doesn't work.
Having some simple parameter values for which Reuters news 'channels' should be fed to the flash player would do the trick; Banking, Technology, Politics, etc.

Jon, Reuters is hoping to add more categories in 2006. This is just the start - watching how the community responds to the offering.

I'm testing the brightcover/reuters service to my search engine users. I think it is pretty impressive for what is does considering the disparate ways to distribute media....
To get to the video, visit my site at www.fooky.com and type "get news video for reuters"

Just wondering whether your QA-people have come up with any idea yet of how to sort the Linux issues. Over here Linux seems to be becoming the flavor of the day, or that's at least what the increasing number of email-complaints along with my server stats seems to suggest.

I agree with the first commented posted here - I too am experiencing a very long load time on a fairly decent net connection. Other times it's very fast.
One thing I would suggest is to have a "Loading Stories Menu" or some other animation to let people know the Viewer *is* still loading up (similar to the initial "Loading Player" animation) and hasn't instead locked up or otherwise failed to load.
...Sometimes I'm not too sure myself, during very long load times, even though my browser window at the bottom left indicates it is "transferring data from sdc.brightcove.com"...
I also agree it will be very nice to get more targeted videos for various categories (entertainment, business, world news, etc)... oh, and a profit sharing program for affiliates when commercials are added (ala Google Adsense) would be nice too. :)
All in all, an excellent service.

I love Brightcove so much. I am very pleased that YOU are in the internet's existence, because your video syndication on websites & blogs online actually help to build up traffic , over top of traffic...:-)

I used to be able to watch weather forecast videos through The Weather Channel.
Now, however, I just get "loading" icon and at the foot of the page, "Transferring data from brightcove.112.2o7.net"
What happened? My connection is via ATT DHL or whatever, NOT datamodem
