Brightcove.TV and Consumer Video Uploads

Posted by: Jeremy Allaire, November 27, 2007

Earlier today, we sent an email to end-users who have been using Brightcove.TV to upload and share personal video clips. In the email, we explained that starting Dec. 18th, we will be removing the upload feature from the Brightcove.TV website. The email raised some questions we will try to clarify in this post.

The update to the Brightcove.TV website follows other changes in the Brightcove business strategy - namely, transitioning the limited investment we had made in the consumer-facing Brightcove.TV website to focus exclusively on the Brightcove Internet TV Platform. While the consumer-facing Brightcove.TV website has been popular (e.g.,Comscore reported ~8M monthly unique users in August), it has been dwarfed by the adoption of our Internet TV platform by media businesses around the world. Our growth in the platform space has actually been quite significant with over 4,000 commercial media publishers using Brightcove to distribute and monetize their broadband video properties. These publishers are doing hundreds of millions of streams per month through the Brightcove platform. Rolled up, these publishers deliver over 120 million uniques visitors per month across thousands of websites.

We are extremely excited about this growth and look forward to continued investment, innovation, and international expansion.

It is worth noting that the changes to consumer video uploads at the Brightcove.TV website in no way impact anyone using Brightcove to distribute or monetize videos. What's more, Brightcove publishers still have the opportunity to opt videos into Brightcove.TV, which continues to be a great way to showcase videos.

Drop us a line with any questions or feedback. We look forward to hearing from you.

This recent move makes me VERY sad and disappointed (not to mention scrambling for an alternative video source), as I found Brightcove's player superior to everything else I found on the Internet. I run a small start-up local news media that greatly benefited from your service. I may not have millions of people coming to my site like the major media businesses featured on your home page. But those who do come to Birmingham View's website have been thoroughly impressed with what we were able to create using Brightcove's platform.

I would ask that you consider some program for small media companies like mine, that produce original content, and like the option of placing Brightcove's players on their own websites as well as creating Internet TV Channels, which I can do just about anywhere.

This announcement made me very happy for a couple reasons:

(1) From a business perspective I did not understand why Brightcove would want to attempt to compete with Youtube and all the other clones in that space when Brightcove's clear competitive advantage was being the video platform to power other sites, especially professional ones.

(2) I am a small media company that uses the Brightcove platform to serve and monetize videos on our main website, Realvibez.com, and Brightcove had to split resources and money across the platform and the consumer service.

Now, all the resources and money can be channeled into keeping the platform the best on the web and continuous improvement of the services and features.

Brightcove benefits us small media companies and startups that have no venture backing and any decision that allows them to serve both large and small professional partners better is welcome.

Keep up the great work.

In other words, you're turning your back on prosumers and going Hollywood.

Lame.

Hi Mike. Just a quick point of clarification. You can still use the Brightcove Platform, which provides all of the quality benefits and much more powerful tools, and can do that currently using the free network offer. Follow this link for more information: http://www.brightcove.com/products/get-started.cfm

Josh Hawkins

Thanks for the clarification, Josh. Jeremy should've mentioned that in the original announcement, instead of bragging about your Big Media clients.

Reading these comments, it seems to me that this announcement just begs for confusion and angry e-mails.

The bottom-line, as I understand it, is that Brightcove.TV will still exist and everyone can continue to use it. The only difference is that instead of managing content through the website, we have to do it through the Console. I'm fine with that. In fact, I prefer the Console.

However, what's missing is the transition from a BC.TV account to a Console account. I have both and I've never been able to understand why videos uploaded through the website into my "bc.tv account" don't automatically appear in my console. I just took it for granted that they would someday. But it doesn't sound like it. So now I have to pay the price for taking a shortcut through the website to put my vids on BC.TV.

What you should have said was:

"Everyone who used to upload and manage their videos on BC.TV has been given a free network account. Now, instead of managing your content on the BC.TV website, you can manage it through the much more powerful Brightcove Console. Just use your existing username and password to sign in at [- insert link here -]. All of your assets will be waiting for you there. If you have any questions, please refer to [- support doc links here -]."

Then it sounds like we're all getting something instead of losing something. Can you please get on that?

If I currently use the console AND I upload videos to Brightcove via TubeMogul. Will these uploads still be accepted or will I have to upload my videos through the console instead of TubeMogul.

by Seth on Nov 29, 2007 5:39:28 PM

I see the mix-up in the comments and eddroid has a great point as well.

Just to give an example: I use Brightcove Console to run the videos on my website, which is a small media company focusing on Reggae music, etc., http://www.realvibez.com.

I have never paid Brightcove any money to have that Console account - it was always free as far as I can tell, as long as you were willing to share revenue, and who wouldn't want to do that?

So no one is losing anything, they simply get pushed to focus on the Console, get to share ad revenue (I have gotten 2 checks already) and can post the videos on their site or their blog.

No love lost.

OK, I've had the email, read the posts and am still none the wiser ;-)
I love the BC player and console and planned to use them for a new golf site we're developing. But I want to upload UCG via my new site (without the user signing into BC which would be a poor user experience) and get it into my BC console (without relabelling all the UGC labels, titles, tags, etc). Can I still do this for free or will I have to pay for the BC platform? Does the free BC account support an XML feed of UGC for example? How much will this cost in the UK?

So sorry for so many questions!

I am totally confused. Will there still be a FREE version of the players we can use or not?

by Naomi on Nov 7, 2008 11:48:43 AM

Free? Yeah right. Not even close.

So I get a call today from a sales person because I replied stating that I wanted more info on the paid service that was available after they shut down the free service in December. This sales person was completely clueless and OBVIOUSLY reading from a script. She even called the "internet" the "interweb"

She goes on to ask me about my business and "what we sell on our interweb". I was mortified.

After dancing around the cost of their supposed "reasonably priced" service which is what I was told in the e-mail before she called, she finally told me that using the paid brightcove service (which is the only option you have after december) would cost me a whopping $6000 a year.

I was so blown away that I asked her to hold on for a second so that I could collect myself. I told her, so your expecting customers that originally used a completely free service to now start paying $500 a month for this new service?

After a long pause and she realized how rediculous the pricing was she said... "Yes we do."

I told her thanks but no thanks. BrightCove is screwing the customers that helped them get on the map. If their new LARGER customers are doing so well then we are to thank for that success. We tested, made suggestions about, provided feedback for the tools that they use today. So I guess we just turned out to be the guinea pigs so that BrightCove could serve the big wigs.

Way to stick it to your core base of users BrightCove.

BRAVO!!!!
