In coordination with our latest release, Brightcove 4.2, we have also published some new documentation in our knowledge base which helps our users get the learn and get the most out of Brightcove 4.2's new feature set.
Though many new and powerful features were included in the August 14th release, I've only highlighted a few new feature documents which are must-reads for every Brightcove customer.
Searching for Videos with the Media API
For customers craving better ways to retrieve video within your Brightcove account, we're happy to announce that there is a new method in the Media API, search_videos which provides significantly more powerful and flexible ways to retrieve videos. This new feature now includes the ability to combine "ANY", "ALL", and "NOT" operators and to search all video metadata fields and custom fields.
The new documentation describes how to use this search_videos to locate videos in your Media Library. If you'd like to start using this new feature today, simply read more about search_videos in the Media API to get started.
Setting Your HTML5 Video Delivery Options
This release marked the launch of our newest HTML5 delivery solution, SmartPlayers, which has the ability to auto-detect devices and choose to run as a Flash player or as an HTML5 player. When a smart player loads using the JavaScript player publishing code, it detects the device that is loading it.
Whether you want to get started using SmartPlayers, we encourage you to read Setting Your HTML5 Video Delivery Options where you'll learn how to configure your Brightcove account to support this new feature. You should also read the documentation if you'd like to opt out of using smart players at the account level, or opt to use them only for newly-created players, or only for existing players. In addition, this document covers how you can enable or disable HTML5 mode for each individual player.
Delivering Video with HTML5 and Smart Players
Brightcove SmartPlayers are designed to help meet the challenges of delivering video in a fragmented world where businesses need to provide Flash as well as HTML5 to serve their whole audience. Though Flash has been the internet standard for years, HTML5 is developing rapidly and though it has not yet reached the maturity of Flash video, it's still an important video delivery option for desktop and mobile.
Once you've enabled HTML5 player delivering by reading Setting Your HTML5 Video Delivery Options within your Brightcove account, Brightcove's SmartPlayers will start delivering Flash or HTML5-ready video based on your viewer's device capabilities.
For an overview about Brightcove smart players and how a single video player can work in either Flash mode or HTML5 mode, see Delivering Video with HTML5 and Smart Players.
Transitioning from MobileCompatibility to Smart Players
For those of you who deployed our earlier, interium HTML5 video solution, MobileCompatibilty.js and BCHTML5.js, you're probably wondering how you can take advantage of Brightcove's new HTML5 delivery system, SmartPlayers.
While our old solution used external libraries to generate HTML5 video experiences, our new solution, SmartPlayers, provides a simpler HTML5 or Flash experience. We've started to do dynamic device detection natively within the JavaScript publishing code. From that we determine if we should render a Flash or HTML5 experience. In both scenarios we're dynamically interpreting the BEML associated with the player template. Your player settings and styling cues translate between the two runtimes.
If you'd like to learn more about how to properly transition from our old HTLM5 solution (MobileCompatibilty.js and BCHTML5.js) to our new, simpler SmartPlayers, read Transitioning from MobileCompatibility to SmartPlayers.
Using the Player API for Closed Captioning
If you're eager to start delivering closed captions to your Brightcove videos, you don't want to miss out on reading Using the Player API for Closed Captioning which details how to to use the Captions Module API (part of the Brightcove Player API) to include closed captions in any Brightcove video.
Displaying DFXP Captions for a Video
Once you've read all about Using the Player API for Closed Captioning using the Captions Module API, you can assign closed captions to your Brightcove videos using the Distribution Format Exchange Profile (DFXP) format for closed captions. To learn how to use the Brightcove Captions API to display DFXP format captions for a video, read our newest documentation for developers, Displaying DFXP Captions for Video.
