It's going to be a very exciting year for us at the LBDG as we start a monthly series of events designed for you to get the most of Brightcove and the emerging Online Video industry.
To kick things off, as you probably all know, we're starting with Brigthcove for Live Streaming!
We've got an exciting line of presenters for you:
One of the most important things that a project design teams needs to think about when building a successful online video initiative is the concept of Consumer Discovery. Amazingly enough, in my experience, this tends to be one of the most overlooked component of any project.
A new year, a new decade and new energy! As ritual as ever with the new year come the predictions and just for fun I thought this year I might give my own thoughts around what to expect.
With this AND taking up Twitter (@cameronchurch) I'm really pushing the boat out here! Here we go:
With the release of native live streaming support in Brightcove 4 the question is not if you should take up live streaming but when.
Live streaming offers a video initiative bags of possibilities but true Live Streaming can be costly. We do work with many partners that can complete this value chain very seamlessly, or for simple projects there's the very easy to use and free Adobe Live Media Encoder that can connect any camera to the servers via a PC.
The London Brightcove Developer Group was such a great success last month that we're going to host another one! This time we're looking at integrating Brightcove with CMS's.
We'll be supplying pizza and beer and this time we're going to team up with our friends over at Drupal and run our event at the same time as their Drupal for Video event with some cross talks. Our Brightcove track of the night will be peppered with CMS Integration talks and howtos.
This time we won't be doing a coding challenge, instead we will be spending more time looking at:
The series so far:

The Beginning -http://blog.brightcove.com/en/2009/10/video-encoding-101-beginning
The Problem Number 1 - http://blog.brightcove.com/en/2009/10/video-encoding-101-problem-number-1
I'm heading down to give my 15mins of cents to the London Facebook Garage tonight.
For those not able to make it tonight we're going to do what we did with the Drupal for Marketing event and stream this live over the BC3 platform.
We'll also have the same tie into a Facebook Livestream box and you can embed the stream directly into your FB Profile by clicking the button in-player.
You can see more about the event here : http://www.facebookgarage.co.uk/
Enjoy!
Just an FYI - for those in the London area that are keen, there is a Facebook Garage user group tomorrow night (November 11th) which I'll be presenting at.
I'm going to spend my 15 minutes of fame looking at how Facebook and Brightcove can combine to be a powerful tool in both the Push and Pull video syndication models.
I'll post my slides up here after the show but feel free to come on down and learn not about my stuff but other great presentations around developing with Facebook.
Tonight our technology partner Drupal will be hosting a Drupal for Marketing event here in London. You can see details about it here: http://drupal4marketing2009.eventbrite.com/
A couple of Brightcovers are going over to participate and we thought it would be fun to follow in the footsteps of Manchester City FC and live broadcast part of the event.
You can view it in the player below and the feed should start around 6.30pm GMT - feel free to post it on your Facebook profile by clicking the FB Share link.
I've been reading a great post by fellow Brightcove Blogger Chris Little over at our Ecosystem blogroll about how Brightcove Players have been whitelisted by Facebook.
This essentially means that a user can share a video from your player/site and have it appear in their FB Newsfeed for immediate inline playback.

So to start any discussion we need to begin with the fundamentals. Specifically what is the process of video encoding? Or even more generally what is encoding and how does it apply to Online Video?
It seems we've finally hit that critical mass. The novelty of online video is starting to wear off quickly and we're now left with acceptance and expectation from the the online community that a website must have video as a core component of its design and offering.
Services such as the iPlayer and Hulu have made catch up TV the primary way to view episodic content for many teenagers and young adults.
The iPhone has made consuming the latest video on the move all the rage.
I received a comment on a past post I did in April looking at creating a custom BEML component that allowed a player to be controlled via the keyboard. A big step needed to get towards a universally accessible player.
For some of our publishers and partners there exists very valid reasons to use their own external media transcoding workflow which excludes the use of the BC3 Server-Side Transcoding functionality.
Those that need to really turn the screw on control of end quality and size you'll need to really dig deep in the more (very) advanced levers available in the encoding process: things like the Profile, Level and Predictor Frames are just some of the things you need to tweak to really squeeze the most from your encoding.
One of my favourite emerging player publishing models is what I like to call 'The Hook and Bucket'. This model tends to be of tremendous value for omni-media infotainment publishers like La Vanguardia in Spain and the OMS network in Germany.
There's so much buzz out there about the iPhone and what it means for the mobile online video market. Sometimes the noise is so energetic that we tend to forget that the iPhone is only one player in the vast smartphone market.
Here, our Regional Director of Sales Engineering, Mark Harpur gives us a great anecdote that demonstrates that Brightcove is ready and available to handsets beyond the iPhone:
Weshalb sind Kennwort (Tags) wichtig
Mit Kennworten kann man automatischen Playlisten nach Wunsch bestücken. Wenn bestimmte Videos nur auf bestimmten Players vorkommen sollten, kann man diese mit einer gezielten Einsetzung von Kennworten und einer ausgedachten Taxonomy Struktur erreichen.
Smart versus Manuelle Playlisten
As the Brightcove platform continues to be used as the foundation for new and unique applications, one of the most exciting emerging proposals is for internal communications over a corporate intranet.
The use cases we're starting to see is for large multinationals who have embraced video as a key tool for corporate and client communications, particularily in the finanicial and legal vertical - if a picture says a 1000 words, how many words does a video say?
We just received word that a major television network based in Greece just launched on Brightcove.
Star Channel - http://www.star.gr - engaged with a Brigthcove Alliance Solution Partner, Olyvon, to rebrand and rebuild their site to meet today's modern trends in web usability and content consumption.
The Brightcove 3 Platform has more than a million and one things you can build on it. Fact.
Here in the Brightcove Best Practices team we work tirelessly with our publishers and partners to get the most success possible from their online video initiatives.
When developing with the BC3 Platform we've come across our fair share of helper tools that really helped to accelerate the development process. I want to share with you 3 of my favourites.
Brightcove Player funktionieren standardmaessig mit DFP (DART for Publishers).
I know I speak for Brightcove to offer our congratulations to Maverick for their recent success at the BAFTAs for winning the Best Interactive award.
Maverick, via Channel 4, has been using Brightcove for awhile and has been given due recognition for their Embarrassing Bodies program.
I have just finished a 3 month Launch Management engagement with Johnston Press PLC who is one of the UK's largest regional newspaper publishers with a major web presence for each of it's newspaper titles and a number of key vertical markets.
The Brightcove Services engagement, which has been recognised by all parties as a resounding success, was designed to give Johnston Press a 'leg-up' in terms of video publishing best practice and generally ensuring maximum benefits are gained from adoption of the Brightcove Platform.
A SDK is a great way to get to grips with a new API. Especially if you're an expert in one particular development language and don't have time to learn another.
For example I've been a .NET developer for most of my career so when Brightcove introduced the JSON/REST based Media API I had to spend some time getting to grips with the new architecture.
Not a challenge at all if you don't have very pressing project deadlines and just need to get on with the job.
A very interesting news bite from our clients at Brand Republic talks about how the latest data is showing that the MobileTV initiative has failed to gain ground (in fact has lost ground) and is partly due to the success of the iPhone.
