iPhone/iPod Touch formatted video website

The Brightcove iPhone Video Site package is a quick way to get all or part of your content library ready to watch on an iPhone or iPod Touch. Brightcove Professional Services will work with you to customize, develop and launch a specially-formatted website that renders perfectly on an iPhone. You can deliver your full content library or a selection of playlists. After launch, no added development or additional steps in your workflow are required to update your iPhone site on an ongoing basis. When you add a new video to a playlist in the Brightcove Studio, it will update automatically on the iPhone site. This package utilizes H.264 video, which has been supported by Brightcove for some time. The videos do not play in Flash on the iPhone, but natively via Quicktime.

Closed Captioning

The Brightcove Closed Captioning player can help make your video experience more accessible to people who are hearing impaired, or broaden your audience globally. Brightcove Professional Services will customize and implement a "bottom third" transparent overlay at the bottom of your video window that automatically displays subtitles, in the language of your choice, for your videos. Captions can be stored on any Internet-accessible system, making for smooth coordination with a transcription service such as dotSub working in parallel.

- Setup and configuration of closed captioning on a player of choice
- Consultation with your transcription service to setup production process

Closed Captioning: More accessible video players

As I mentioned in a previous post about maximizing viewership, closed captioning and subtitles (same technology, more languages) is an easy way to reach a wider audience. Whether that audience speaks another language, or is hearing impaired. 

We had the good fortune to recently finish a great project with SMUD, the Sacramento Municipal Utility District, to develop a closed-captioning enabled custom video player. This implementation can easily be replicated for other Brightcove implementations, including any number of player templates. We built a custom SWF component and attached it to a player with our player scripting framework BEML.

SMUD already had a transcription vendor engaged. Our BEML component looks for transcriptions in a certain directory, then pulls them into the player if they exist. We also developed a little on/off 'CC' button (see it next to full-screen above) to turn the captions on or off.

10 Tips for the Grown-Up Video Business

Over the past few years we've watched online video businesses mature from the hey-kids-let's-post-some-videos phase to video playing a central role in an online business. In the first year of the video adoption curve, we find our customers focused on production, basic user experience and general setup. By the 18-month mark or sooner, we see three main themes emerge. This is fairly consistent -  be it an enterprise, government agency or media company. 

-- Audience Growth
-- Measurement 
-- Return on Investment  

Depending on the kind of company or organization, these themes manifest themselves in a lot of ways. Here in Pro Serv land, we spend a lot of time working with clients on features that support these themes. If you are reading this post, it's likely you're already thinking about a few of them. And if you aren't thinking about the things below, you're leaving traffic or revenue on the table. 

This list is obviously quite self-serving - all items are achievable with Brightcove, either out of the box, with partners or with custom development via Professional Services, or some combination. But these themes are universal and could be applied to any online video business that has outgrown YouTube or Blip.tv.

Here we go, in somewhat of a particular order:

10. Internationalization

If you have global rights, it's possible to expand your audience multiple times over by making video content available in additional languages and promoting it accordingly. Closed Captioning as a Brightcove player feature is possible via custom Flash programming, or as part of a Brightcove Pro Services engagement. Transcription and the creation of the titles themselves is the most challenging element here. A Brightcove partner such as DotSub can help, with a network of thousands of titlers around the world. 

9. YouTube

Whether you like it or not, there are a lot of people that watch and, more importantly, search for video on Google's little video site. Use a service such as TubeMogul to upload to Brightcove first, then upload all of your videos to YouTube automatically. Or, if you have time, try uploading short preview for your long-form video as a means of promotion back to your own site. 

8. New platforms

If your rights allow it there's no excuse to miss out on iPhone and iPod Touch playback, or Boxee for that matter. You can do marvelous things with MRSS and H.264 playback. We even gave away some code for to format your library for the iPhone. 

7. Viral Distribution

I remember way way back, in 2005 or so, when limiting traffic - DRM and off-site playback -  were more common topics of conversation than traffic growth. Looking back we all were so silly. Viral distribution can be a very effective tool for expanding audience. With Brightcove, you can customize your viral distribution player to be different than the player from which the embed originated. This can be an effective way to brand your viral player, outside the playback area or with a clickable watermark on top of the video. Analytics services such as Visible Measures and TubeMogul can help track, in detail, where your playback occurs. Our talented Art Director, Jeremy Merle, has a great post on player customization, including watermarking and viral customization. 

6. Contextual programming

If you have a text-centric site with articles or pages, try to embed videos on as many of those pages as possible. You can drop a Brightcove template into your Content Management System, use instances of that template on your articles, and populate a title ID dynamically. Check out the explosion video on SFGate.com (right) for a good example of an article embed. 

5. Social engagement

Comments and ratings are proven tools to get people to watch more videos or come back for more. Partners such as Pluck and JS-Kit make it very simple to use. Check out JS-Kit in action on sites such as Channel Sun

4. Editorial engagement

People are inherently voyeurs. We like to watch what everyone else is watching. It's possible to create "Most Viewed" playlists quite easily. Brightcove has out of the box functions, APIs, and partners that make it easy to create lots of new doorways into your video. Particularly cool, you can do any of the items below in players or as RSS feeds. With the feeds and with BEML you can make custom widgets that promote videos and link more deeply into your video library. Here are a few ideas:

-- Newest content (out of the box Brightcove playlist) 
-- Related content (out of the box Brightcove playlist)
-- Most popular content (out of the box Brightcove playlist) 
-- Top rated (possible with a ratings partner such as Pluck or JS-Kit) 
-- People who like this, also like... (possible with a recommendations service partner  such as Loomia or Taboola

3. Analytics

What are people watching? When are they watching? On what pages are they watching? How long do they watch before changing videos or leaving the site? These are questions that absolutely every mature video business must understand on a daily basis. Knowing your audience will inform your advertising, editorial, distribution and production decisions. And there are lots of choices out there. With Brightcove 3 there are many ways to more deeply understand your audience. My one-liners below are meant to oversimplify what I see as differentiators for some of our wonderful partners. There is obviously a lot more nuance. Brian, Brett, Jason, et al, please feel free to comment to add more color. 

-- Visible Measures - Advanced video analytics including visual abandonment stats. No custom dev work required for integration.
-- TubeMogul - Unified viral distribution stats. 
-- Omniture Site Catalyst - Integrate video with your overall site stats for deep audience measurement
-- Google Analytics - It's free. We've got it well documented. And you are probably already using GA.


2. Search Engine Optimization

Flash video players hide your video metadata from Google and other search engines (except for AOL's excellent Truveo vide search). There are two great ways to work around this limitation while maintaining a great user experience. For more information on SEO and Brightcove, please check out the oft-quoted white paper

1. Google Sitemap. You can output your Brightcove metadata via Media API and transform it into Google's sitemap format. There's an old article on the subject here and a new one on the way soon. I'll update this post accordingly. We've done a bunch of these now in Professional Services. 

2. Full SEO enabled website. In Pro Services, we've worked on a lot of SEO focused experiences including Channel Sun, Wired and Canoe. This is probably our most common type of project at this point - the SEO-focused video library. The key attributes of such a project are:

-- All videos play on their own pages and are URL addressable
-- Name of the video is on the page, in HTML in an H1 tag
-- Name of the video is the name of the page itself, as
-- Pages run on your domain, within your site framework. A little server-side code - in Java, PHP or ASP.Net - are all that's required.     


1. Homepage

Put video on your front page! Here are a few nice implementations:

-- Weather.com - Prominent display, front and center. Clear Play buttons.
-- Wired - Below the fold, but they put an actual video on the page.  
-- The New York Times - Custom player with on-page playback and a few other choices, with links in to the video library.

Welcome to 'More Eyeballs'

It's great to see so much bloggy activity here at Brightcove, with literally dozens of people getting into the act around the company. Consider this a belated introduction and mission statement if you will. 

The 'More Eyeballs' blog will be (or at least try to stay) focused on how you can extend the Brightcove platform to grow your audience. Our posts, when on topic, will try to illustrate some of the best practices that we have been putting into action on some big projects from the Brightcove Professional Services team. 

Feel free to send in topics or questions for future posts. Check out some of the projects we've had the good fortune to work on such as Wired or Sun, or feel free to ask us to chime in on any Brightcove experience you come across out there.

Social engagement to drive viewership

Have you ever walked by a restaurant and decided not to go in because you saw nobody sitting down? There's a similar effect with websites. 

Comments and ratings are an easy way to give your website or video library a heartbeat. Suddenly, your viewers know they are not alone. The videos are changing all the time - and so is the discussion. Comments and ratings, as well as other viral sharing tools, are a proven way to retain your existing viewers and get more people to come back to watch your videos. 

Brightcove Professional Services has integrated various comments and ratings packages onto sites as disparate as Sun (http://channelsun.sun.com) and Wired (http://www.wired.com/video). We've incorporated technology from a number of Brightcove Technology Partners, most often JS-Kit, to enable comments and ratings. We were really happy to see JS-Kit's recent announcement with Yahoo. JS-Kit will be using Yahoo's OAuth based authentication system across its network of 600,000 partner sites. This means that commenters on any website can sign in (if the publisher requires authentication) with their Yahoo credentials. This is a great deal for our friends at JS-Kit and good news for anyone considering building comments and ratings into their video library. Congrats to Khris, Felix and team.

Showtime at 30,000 feet

It's a treat to get to use something you've worked on in your personal life. A designer from the iPhone team or the person at IDEO that did the stand-up toothpaste dispenser must get this kind of rush on a daily basis. On the Brightcove Professional Services team, I dare say that's starting to happen to us on a regular basis. We and millions of other people get to touch our work each day on great sites such as Showtime and The New York Times


After a long delay and a cancelled flight on United, I find myself checking out the wifi on the new Virgin America BOS-SFO route. I'm impressed so far with the whole experience, from the purple mood lighting to the retro Doom on the gaming system. But the best part is the Internet connection. I'm a little sad to recognize that one of the few places I could be disconnected will soon be gone. But after a long week and stressful afternoon, it's really cool to kick back and get to check out a full episode of United States of Tara, Showtime's new comedy starring Toni Collette. The full-screen video, using Dynamic Delivery (included in Brightcove 3), is just awesome. The video quality is great and there have been no hiccups. Really impressive for the wifi service - and Brightcove too. And the show is pretty great.
