Image Capture - 16:9 Video support and thumbnail cropping!
You can now provide a more polished look for your Videos and players than ever before using Image Capture in the Media module to grab thumbnails and video stills. Image Capture now generates video stills that respect the aspect ratio of the video you uploaded, making for a finished look when presented in your video players. You can use thumbnail cropping to highlight an area of the video frame as the promo image for your video. Learn more.

Faster, Lighter Players
All that exercise has paid off! Our players have shed some extra pounds with this release. All player templates now boast a slimmer physique, having lost more than 20% of their size in this release. We are always working to optimize the delivery of your players to provide the best experience for your viewers.

Integrated Player Debugger
Did you know that you can right-click on a Brightcove 3 player and choose to open a new debugger window? This debugger will output messages about events in the Brightcove player and API and is very useful when developing plug-ins using our player APIs. Try it today!

New Advertising API Method: StayInFullScreen
The Advertising Module of the Player API includes two new methods, getStayInFullScreen() and setStayInFullScreen(). These are simple methods we added for developers who don't want players to exit full screen mode when using external ads or override ads. If set to true, the player won't exit full screen when an external ad comes in. Learn More.

Built-in Ad Server
Want to upload videos to your Brightcove account and use them as ads? Check out this Brightcove Developer article that provides sample code and explains how you can do it today. Note, currently progessive download (ie HTTP) content delivery is required to take advantage of this example.

Enjoy the new features and please let us know what you think in the Brightcove Forums.

Posted by: Emily Glass, June 24, 2009

We are pleased to announce the availability of Brightcove 3.3.

Check out the Product Updates page for a complete summary of the new and improved features.

Some highlights from the release include:

Media Management

Custom Fields for Videos. The custom fields feature, formerly available only to Brightcove Enterprise Edition publishers, is now also available to Brightcove Pro Edition. You can now set up new custom fields for your videos in the Brightcove Studio. Custom video fields are a great way to store additional information about your videos that you want to synchroonize with your Content Management system (SMC) or that you want to surface within your player. You can also use custom fields to save Category or Genre information for your Videos that you can use to drive player organization or send to your reporting system using an Analytics integration.

Advertising

New UI for setting cue points. The Advertising module now includes a UI for setting cue points for mid-roll ads. You can set a cue point at any point within your video, then enable Mid-roll ads for your players so that you can deliver commercial breaks or interstitial video ads during the playback of your Video content. You can also target ads to specific cue points using cue point metadata (key value pairs). All of our out of the box Advertising integrations support cue points. Read more.

Support for IAB Digital Video Ad Serving Template (VAST). The VAST standard allows publishers to plug into multiple third-party digital video ad servers and networks without custom development. Brightcove now provides the most comprehensive out-of-the-box support for the emerging VAST standard. Read more.

Player Publishing

Multiple plug-ins. You can configure a player to load multiple plug-ins in the Publishing module. This enables you to send player event tracking data to more than one analytics solution, for example. You could also configure an Analytics integration and a 3rd party integration SWF directly at the player level without having to alter the player template (BEML) at all. Read more.

Multiple domains for player domain restriction. Using the Publishing module, you can restrict your player to one or more domains by entering the URLs the player should be restricted to. This can help you distribute your players more easily to multiple affiliate sites, while ensuring that your player is locked down to only the subset of domains that you specify. Learn how.

BEML and player template features

Custom skins for elements of player components. Introducing custom skins, a new option for styling components of custom player templates. Using custom skins can give you fine-grained control over the appearance of your player templates without having to do any custom Flash development. Read more.

Enjoy the new features and please let us know what you think!

Brightcove 3.2 now available!

Posted by: Eric Anderson, March 22, 2009

I am pleased to announce the availability of the latest Brightcove release – Brightcove 3.2.  Brightcove 3.2 was designed around several themes including:

Simplifying CMS Integrations

We have added several new capabilities to Brightcove’s meta-data management system and the Media APIs to enable integrations with 3rd party CMS solutions.  Specifically, Brightcove Enterprise now supports account-level custom fields for video objects.  This means customers can add video meta-data fields to their account.  These new fields are then available to set and read data in the Studio, through batch (FTP) ingestion and in the player and media APIs.  We have also added new media APIs which lets you query your account and return a list of all modified and deleted videos.  With these new capabilities customers can use a consistent set of meta-data to organize your video assets (in both Brightcove and an existing CMS) and also synchronize any changes made to video meta-data between Brightcove and an existing CMS.

Custom Publishing Application Integration

Customers who use external applications (either manual or automated) for publishing content into Brightcove will find there are new media APIs that allow more full control over video meta-data.  To enable this we added a series of new media API write functions including write APIs for:

- Custom fields

- Geo-restriction values at the video level

- Thumbnail and video still creation

- URL locations for renditions when using remote assets (remote assets are used with custom CDN integrations)

These new APIs will allow easier integration between existing publishing applications and workflows and Brightcove.

Player Development Productivity

We made a series of enhancements to Brightcove’s player framework and BEML language including adding new standard BEML templates in the Studio, adding new BEML components, standardizing our event model and allowing programmatic control of related videos that are surfaced in the “Additional Videos” list in the player menu.

Advertising Ecosystem Support

For customers using Brightcove’s advertising integrations we have exposed all of the available ad translators in the Studio.  We have also expanded support for Google AdSense for Video.  Lastly, users of the Brightcove Professional and Enterprise editions can now integrate with Tremor Acudeo out of the box.

Reporting and Analytics

We have made several enhancements to our reporting infrastructure to allow reports to be returned faster.

In addition to these themes we are providing several other improvements to the Brightcove service including:

- Support for Adobe Flash player 10

- Supporting all available countries for users who are using Brightcove’s enhanced geo-filtering features

- We now support transcoding assets uploaded through the batch (FTP) ingestion system

- You can swap video assets for a specific title in the Studio without recreating the whole title

- We provide better visibility into the status of uploads in the Studio

- You can now get the JavaScript, HTML or direct URL for publishing a video in the Studio in one click
